Partial service history (PSH) means a car has some service records but not a complete set, so there are gaps where scheduled work was either missed or simply not documented, unlike a full service history (FSH). It usually lowers a car's value and can slow a private sale, because a buyer cannot confirm that cam belts, oil changes and other scheduled jobs were done on time. Gathering any garage invoices, MOT certificates and receipts helps rebuild the timeline. We buy cars regardless of service history, so partial or missing records are never a barrier to selling to us.

Missing service history typically reduces a used car's value by around 5% to 20%, with the biggest impact on higher-mileage, premium or complex models where buyers rely on a full record to prove the cam belt and major servicing were done on time. Older, lower-value cars are affected far less. You can soften the hit by gathering garage invoices, MOT records showing consistent mileage, and cam belt receipts. Part exchange is worth it mainly for convenience, as you trade your old car against a dealer's forecourt car in one visit with no separate sale to arrange, but you usually get less than selling directly, it only works if you are actually buying from that dealer, and many dealers will not take faulty, damaged, non-running or failed-MOT cars.
