What families most often say: "I didn't realise this would be the easy bit." We keep it that way.
Our executor-friendly process

Four unhurried steps

We move at your pace - not ours. If grant of probate is still pending, we hold the valuation until you're ready. If a solicitor is involved, we deal directly with them.

1
Written valuation, no obligation

We come out at a time that suits you, view the car carefully, and provide a written valuation. It's suitable for submission to the executor, the solicitor or HMRC if probate needs a value for the vehicle. No pressure to sell afterwards.

2
We wait for probate if needed

You cannot legally sell a vehicle that's still part of the estate until you have the authority to do so (usually grant of probate or letters of administration). We hold the valuation for as long as it takes. No chasing.

3
Free collection, payment to the estate

When you're ready we collect the vehicle free of charge - including non-runners if it's been sitting. Payment goes by instant bank transfer to the estate or executor account, whichever the solicitor or family prefers. Signed paper receipt for the file.

4 DVLA & paperwork handled

We complete the V5C "new keeper" section, notify the DVLA that the vehicle has been sold out of the estate, and send confirmation. You get a clean audit trail for the estate file.

What to have ready

Paperwork for a probate car sale

Don't worry if you can't find everything - we'll tell you what matters and work around the rest. In practice we often help families locate documents during the valuation visit.

Essential
  • The V5C (logbook) - even if the deceased is still named as keeper
  • Both sets of keys (if you can find them)
  • Death certificate or interim certificate (so we can see the car out of the estate correctly)
  • Proof of your own ID if you're the executor or next of kin
Helpful, but not essential
  • Service history and MOT record
  • Any finance agreement paperwork - some estates carry HP or PCP finance the lender may need to settle
  • Grant of probate or letters of administration (required before completion, but not needed for the valuation visit)
  • The solicitor's contact details if you'd like us to liaise with them directly
Missing V5C? It happens a lot. We can still value the car and proceed on a V62 replacement. We've done dozens of these; we'll walk you through it.
Timing & probate

Can you sell the car before probate is granted?

Short answer: usually not - but we can still help. Here's how the timing typically works.

Before probate

We can still visit, photograph and document a written valuation. Executors often need this figure for the probate application itself. No vehicle moves; no money changes hands.

During probate

The vehicle can normally stay insured as part of the estate while the application is processed. The DVLA's "tell us once" service handles the change-of-keeper notification when the time comes.

After probate

Once the grant is issued, we collect free of charge, pay the estate account, complete DVLA paperwork and close the loop. The whole completion step usually takes about an hour at your kitchen table.

FAQs - Probate & bereavement car sales

Can I sell the car before probate is granted?
Usually not - the legal ownership passes to the estate on death, and most executors need the grant of probate or letters of administration before they can dispose of assets. But we can still visit, document a written valuation and wait. Many executors actually need that valuation figure for the probate application itself.
Do you charge for the valuation visit?
No. The visit, the written valuation and any advice we give your solicitor are free. You are under no obligation to sell to us afterwards - plenty of families use our figure for probate and then keep the car within the family. See our We Buy Cars Hexham page for how we value vehicles generally.
Who do you pay - the family or the estate?
Whichever is correct. Most commonly we pay directly into the estate account. Sometimes the executor prefers payment to their own account to then distribute - either is fine. We follow the solicitor's instructions if there is one.
The car has been sitting for months and won't start. Is that a problem?
Not at all. We winch non-runners at no extra cost. Flat batteries, seized brakes, SORN status, expired MOT - all routine. See our what we buy section for the full list.
What if the car has outstanding finance?
Common with estates. We settle the finance directly with the lender using the settlement figure, and pay any balance to the estate. If the finance was in the deceased's name, the lender usually has a bereavement team - we liaise with them if you'd like.
Can we deal through our solicitor?
Yes. We're used to working with probate solicitors across Hexham, Corbridge and Newcastle. Give us their details and we'll send the written valuation, completion paperwork and receipt directly to them. You don't have to deal with anything you don't want to.
What if the car is worth a lot or is a classic?
High-value vehicles we can buy outright, or we can handle them on a sale-or-return basis through our 13,000+ dealer network if the estate wants to maximise return. We will tell you honestly which makes sense for your situation.
We live outside Hexham - do you still come?
Yes. We regularly cover the whole Tyne Valley, into Newcastle, and out to Haltwhistle and Bellingham. See the full locations we cover. If your postcode isn't listed, call us - we almost always still come.
How quickly can you come?
For the valuation visit, usually within 24-48 hours. For the collection itself, we work to your timeline, not ours. Some families want it gone the same week; others take months. Both are fine.
What about insurance while the car is waiting?
If the deceased's insurance is still in force it normally stays valid through probate, but check with the insurer. If you need the vehicle moved to a safer location while you wait for probate, we can sometimes store it - ask.
Can you clear the car of personal effects first?
Always. We'll never collect a vehicle without giving you time to check every pocket, glovebox and boot space. Items people forget: spare keys, parking permits, medication, sunglasses, handwritten notes in the door bins.
Will you be discreet? This is upsetting enough.
Yes. Unmarked pickup if you prefer, no company signage on the drive, and no social-media post. This is private. Just a quiet handover at your kitchen table.
Is the valuation suitable for HMRC / probate submission?
Yes. We provide a written valuation on headed paper with the vehicle details, our reasoning and the date, signed by the buyer. Probate registries and HMRC have always accepted ours - ask your solicitor if in doubt.
Who are you and why should we trust you with this?
John James runs it - Hexham-based since 2021. We have 160+ five-star reviews and a body of published case studies including previous probate sales. Call us and you speak to a real person, not a call-centre.
