Scrap My Car in Ponteland

Ponteland sellers tend to keep cars longer than most, and when one finally reaches the end of its road it is often parked up in a driveway in Darras Hall, Eland Green, or one of the streets behind the high street, sometimes for years. We are a Hexham-based team that buys it directly. Fifteen miles down the A696, all of NE20 covered, instant quote on screen the moment you enter your registration.

The short version
What to expect
  • Instant quote on screen via our scrap wizard, under two minutes
  • Two options on the same screen: drop off at our Hexham or Allendale yard for a higher price (if the car still drives), or free collection from your Ponteland address
  • Paid by instant bank transfer or cash on collection / drop-off
  • We complete the V5C/3 yellow slip and notify the DVLA on the spot
  • Non-runners, SORN, failed MOT, missing V5, all fine

Drop-off or collection, which suits

The wizard shows you both options at the same time and you choose.

If the car drives, drop-off pays more
Saves us a flatbed run. Hexham yard is 30 minutes from Ponteland. Allendale pays the highest figure on the page because we already have collection runs out that way.
If it doesn't drive, free collection
We bring the flatbed. Lower than drop-off because we are absorbing the recovery cost, but it is still the figure on screen with nothing deducted on the day.

You do not have to decide before getting the quote. Both numbers appear together so you can compare.

Where in Ponteland we collect from

Anywhere in NE20. Recent collections have included:

Coverage area
  • Ponteland village proper (Main Street, Bell Villas, Thornhill Road)
  • Darras Hall, Eland Green, Eachwick
  • Milbourne, Higham Dykes, Heugh
  • Stamfordham, Whalton, Belsay
  • Out as far as Kirkheaton, Kearsley, the Great North Road

A recent Ponteland visit was for a 1996 BMW 525tdse that had been SORN'd on the driveway for twelve years. The owner had a figure in mind that the trade was not going to pay, and we were honest about that. We presented the Sale or Return route as an alternative; the offers came in lower than he wanted and he kept the car. It is still on the driveway. The full story is in our case studies, and we publish it because how we handle a no-deal is at least as informative as how we handle a deal. Most cars in that condition end up scrapped eventually. When this one does, we expect to be the first call the family makes.

What we buy in Ponteland

We buy any car or van that is at the end of its road:

Cars sat off the road for two, five, ten years
Failed MOT, repair costs more than the car
Insurance write-offs (Cat S or Cat N)
SORN cars, declared off-road
Mechanical: head gasket, gearbox, EGR, DPF
Damaged bodywork, rust through, kerbed alloys
Cars where the V5 has gone missing
Inherited vehicles from a probate estate

We work trade-to-trade, which means we can transact without a valid MOT and without the three-month V5 personal-holding rule that locks out most online buyers.

How it works

  1. Enter your registrationin the scrap wizard. It pulls DVLA and MOT history automatically. Add the postcode and a couple of condition notes.
  2. The quote appears on screen instantlyYou see all options side by side: collection from your driveway, drop-off at Hexham, drop-off at Allendale. Pick whichever suits.
  3. Book the slotCollections are usually within 24 to 48 hours. Drop-off is whenever you can get there during opening hours.
  4. We complete the V5C/3(the yellow tear-off slip), pay you by instant bank transfer or cash, and notify the DVLA before we leave. Done.

Ponteland sellers and the value question

Ponteland's car ownership profile is different from most of Northumberland. We see a lot of premium SUVs (Range Rover, Q5, X3) and a fair number of one-owner-from-new family estates that have done long-haul motorway miles. When these cars reach end-of-life the temptation is to call a national instant-quote service who will give a low number based on age and mileage alone. That is fine for some scenarios but it misses two things.

First, if the car is still mechanically sound and just needs a clutch or a turbo, you may be looking at a proper used-car valuation rather than scrap. We will tell you straight if scrapping is the wrong move.

Second, premium cars carry recoverable parts that pure-weight scrap quotes ignore. A 2014 Q5 with a working DSG box and clean alloys is worth meaningfully more than the metal value alone. We factor that in. The breaker yard at the metal weighbridge will not.

When you should NOT scrap a car

If the car is running, has a current MOT, and the V5 is in your name, you are probably leaving money on the table by scrapping it. Use the main valuation wizard instead. Even high-mileage tatty cars often clear scrap value by a meaningful margin in the trade.

Genuine end-of-life criteria, in our view: failed last MOT with major work needed, sat off the road over six months with no plan to return, accident damage that is uneconomic to repair, or the engine has gone.

Common Ponteland scrap questions

My Range Rover is sat in the driveway and has not moved in two years. Will you collect from Darras Hall?

Yes. We bring a flatbed and a battery jumper as standard. Most long-stood cars need both before they will roll on. The wizard will spot a non-runner from the MOT history and price the collection option for you.

Is the drop-off price always higher than collection?

Yes, usually by a noticeable margin, because we save the flatbed cost. The wizard shows both numbers at once so you can decide.

It's a Cat S write-off, am I wasting your time?

No. Cat S and Cat N markers are not a sale-killer for us. Honest upfront disclosure of what was damaged and what was repaired gets you a firm offer we honour on the day.

I have outstanding finance. Can you still take it?

Often yes. We can settle the finance company directly and pay you the difference. Bring the settlement letter on the day. If the car is genuinely worth less than the outstanding finance, it gets more complicated and we will tell you straight.

How do I know the car is no longer my responsibility once you take it?

We complete the V5C/3 yellow slip and notify the DVLA before we leave. From that point the registered-keeper record is updated, so MOT, tax and any future paperwork is no longer in your name.
