2012 Toyota Yaris TR 1.33 VVT-i - collected in Hexham

A 2012 Toyota Yaris TR, owned by the same lady in Stocksfield from nearly new. Her garage in Hexham gave it a pre-MOT check-over and advised the clutch was on its way out, and with the other jobs it wasn't worth keeping on the road. She rang us, we beat the scrap price, and it's now a courtesy car for a business in London.

This Yaris had one owner from nearly new, a lady in Stocksfield who'd kept it going to just over 145,000 miles. She booked it into Armstrong and Nichol on Hencotes in Hexham, the family-run garage Joyce has run since 2020, for a check-over and a pre-MOT look before the test was due.

Honest advice from the garage

The clutch was high. Not slipping yet, but clearly on its way out, and there were a few other jobs on the list alongside it. The MOT had just run out. Rather than take the work on, the garage told her straight: on a car of this age and mileage it wasn't economical to keep on the road. That's good, honest advice and it's the reason she gave us a call.

Why the sums didn't work

A clutch on a Yaris is around a five-hour job before you've bought the clutch kit and added VAT, and at local labour rates that alone was heading towards what the car was worth. Add the other bits and you're past it. None of that is a knock on the car. It had done 145,000 reliable miles for one owner, which is what Toyotas do.

More than scrap, and a new job in London

We beat the scrap price, collected it from the garage, and sold it to a company in London who wanted a cheap, dependable five-door as a courtesy car for their business. Reversing camera, air con, an honest little car with life left in it for the right use, which is exactly the point: a car that no longer adds up for one person can still add up for someone else.

Been told your car isn't worth the repair? Got a clutch on the way out or an MOT you don't want to throw money at? Get a valuation, read about the cars with clutch problems we buy and MOT failures, or see what we pay for Toyotas. We'll usually beat scrap, and we collect from the garage if that's where it is.
