Online platform

Cazoo vs a local Hexham doorstep sale

Cazoo was previously a national online used-car retailer that bought from private sellers. Following administration in May 2024 and acquisition by MOTORS, it relaunched in April 2025 as a dealer marketplace. The current Cazoo lists cars for sale by dealers; it is not a route for selling your car as a private seller.

Status check Cazoo no longer buys cars from private sellers. The original Cazoo went into administration in May 2024. The brand was acquired by MOTORS for £5m and relaunched in April 2025 as a dealer marketplace - a platform where dealers list cars for sale, not a buyer of used cars. If you came here looking to sell to Cazoo in Hexham, that route is closed. We do buy from private sellers across Hexham, Corbridge, Prudhoe and the wider Tyne Valley - free home collection, written offer before anyone visits.

About Cazoo

The original Cazoo (founded 2018) operated a vertically integrated online used-car business: buying cars from private sellers at scale, refurbishing them, and selling direct to consumers. The model proved unprofitable; the company was reportedly valued at $6 billion at its 2021 NYSE listing peak before going into administration in May 2024. MOTORS (a Novum Capital portfolio company) acquired the brand for around £5 million and relaunched Cazoo in April 2025 as a marketplace where dealers list inventory for buyers to browse - structurally similar to Auto Trader.

Location and hours: National platform (now a dealer marketplace, not a buyer). No physical or buying presence in Hexham or the North East.

  • Check the offer validity period and any conditions

What happened to Cazoo - and what it means for sellers in Hexham

Cazoo was one of the highest-profile online used-car businesses of the 2020-2024 period. Founded in 2018 by Alex Chesterman (who previously co-founded LoveFilm and Zoopla), the company raised hundreds of millions in venture capital, listed on the New York Stock Exchange in August 2021 at a peak valuation reportedly around $6 billion, and ran a vertically integrated buy-prep-sell model: buying cars from private sellers, refurbishing them at central reconditioning sites, and delivering to consumers nationwide.

The administration (May 2024). The integrated model proved expensive to run at scale. Cazoo Group filed for administration on 21 May 2024, putting around 208 remaining staff at risk of redundancy. Reporting at the time noted the share price had collapsed from a peak of around $14 to under $0.20.

The MOTORS acquisition (June 2024). MOTORS, a UK used-car classifieds operator and Novum Capital portfolio company, announced the acquisition of the Cazoo brand and website on 28 June 2024 for a price reported at £5 million - a fraction of the peak valuation three years earlier.

The relaunch (April 2025). Cazoo relaunched on 2 April 2025 as a dealer-focused used-car marketplace. The new platform is structurally a competitor to Auto Trader rather than a direct buyer or seller of cars. At relaunch it listed 200,000 cars from a network of 5,000-plus dealers.

What this means for someone in Hexham trying to sell their car. The Cazoo brand still exists, but the business model is unrecognisable from the 2020-2024 version. There is no route on cazoo.co.uk to sell a car as a private seller. If you came to this comparison page expecting Cazoo to be a buyer of used cars, that is no longer accurate.

The local alternative. The role Cazoo played for Hexham and Tyne Valley sellers - get an online offer, have someone collect from your home, get paid - is exactly what we do. Difference: we are a real local Hexham business with no venture-capital pressure, no public-market obligations, and no risk of disappearing into administration. We have been collecting from sellers in Hexham, Corbridge, Prudhoe, Stocksfield, Bellingham, Allendale, Haltwhistle and the wider Tyne Valley since 2021. Our offer is free, written, and the figure on the offer is the figure that lands in your account.

Common questions

Do you collect from my home address?
Yes. We collect from your address across Hexham, the Tyne Valley and surrounding areas. No branch visit or appointment away from home is needed.
Do you buy non-runners and failed MOT vehicles?
Yes. Failed MOTs, non-runners, SORN vehicles, warning lights and cosmetic damage are all assessed. We give you a clear price before committing.
How quickly do you pay?
Payment is by bank transfer confirmed at your address in most cases. Funds are verified before we leave.
Are there admin fees or deductions?
No admin deductions on straightforward purchases. If you use our Sale-or-Return route, all terms are agreed before we start.
What paperwork do I need?
V5C logbook and one photo ID. Service history helps with valuation but is not essential. We complete the DVLA steps at collection.
What is the difference between your valuation and a dealer part exchange?
A dealer part exchange values your car as a cost to offset against a new purchase. A direct cash offer values it as a standalone transaction. The two figures can differ significantly for the same car.
