Online platform
Cazoo vs a local Hexham doorstep sale
Cazoo was previously a national online used-car retailer that bought from private sellers. Following administration in May 2024 and acquisition by MOTORS, it relaunched in April 2025 as a dealer marketplace. The current Cazoo lists cars for sale by dealers; it is not a route for selling your car as a private seller.

About Cazoo
The original Cazoo (founded 2018) operated a vertically integrated online used-car business: buying cars from private sellers at scale, refurbishing them, and selling direct to consumers. The model proved unprofitable; the company was reportedly valued at $6 billion at its 2021 NYSE listing peak before going into administration in May 2024. MOTORS (a Novum Capital portfolio company) acquired the brand for around £5 million and relaunched Cazoo in April 2025 as a marketplace where dealers list inventory for buyers to browse - structurally similar to Auto Trader.

Cazoo
How the Online platform route works
In 2026, Cazoo no longer offers a sell-your-car route to private sellers. The platform is now positioned for buyers searching for used cars listed by dealers. If you previously sold a car to Cazoo, that path no longer exists.
- Confirm whether a site visit or appointment is required
- Check the offer validity period and any conditions
- Clarify payment method and timing before committing
- Ask about any deductions or inspection adjustments
What Cazoo look for
Cazoo no longer buys cars from private sellers. The current Cazoo platform displays inventory listed by their dealer partners.
We Buy Cars Hexham accepts
- All makes and models
- High mileage and older vehicles
- Failed MOT and SORN
- Non-runners and fault warning lights
- Partial or no service history
- Body damage and wear
When each option suits
A doorstep sale suits when
- You want collection from home without travelling to a branch
- The car has faults, failed MOT, is a non-runner or SORN
- You need certainty of payment on the same day
- You are in Hexham, the Tyne Valley or surrounding areas
- You have already had a dealer valuation and want to compare
- You want DVLA paperwork handled at point of collection
Cazoo suits when
Cazoo no longer fits anyone trying to sell a car as a private seller. For sellers in Hexham, the Tyne Valley and surrounding areas, our doorstep service handles the role Cazoo previously played: free home collection, written offer before anyone visits, payment by Faster Payment before keys leave your hand.
What happened to Cazoo - and what it means for sellers in Hexham
The administration (May 2024). The integrated model proved expensive to run at scale. Cazoo Group filed for administration on 21 May 2024, putting around 208 remaining staff at risk of redundancy. Reporting at the time noted the share price had collapsed from a peak of around $14 to under $0.20.
The MOTORS acquisition (June 2024). MOTORS, a UK used-car classifieds operator and Novum Capital portfolio company, announced the acquisition of the Cazoo brand and website on 28 June 2024 for a price reported at £5 million - a fraction of the peak valuation three years earlier.
The relaunch (April 2025). Cazoo relaunched on 2 April 2025 as a dealer-focused used-car marketplace. The new platform is structurally a competitor to Auto Trader rather than a direct buyer or seller of cars. At relaunch it listed 200,000 cars from a network of 5,000-plus dealers.
What this means for someone in Hexham trying to sell their car. The Cazoo brand still exists, but the business model is unrecognisable from the 2020-2024 version. There is no route on cazoo.co.uk to sell a car as a private seller. If you came to this comparison page expecting Cazoo to be a buyer of used cars, that is no longer accurate.
The local alternative. The role Cazoo played for Hexham and Tyne Valley sellers - get an online offer, have someone collect from your home, get paid - is exactly what we do. Difference: we are a real local Hexham business with no venture-capital pressure, no public-market obligations, and no risk of disappearing into administration. We have been collecting from sellers in Hexham, Corbridge, Prudhoe, Stocksfield, Bellingham, Allendale, Haltwhistle and the wider Tyne Valley since 2021. Our offer is free, written, and the figure on the offer is the figure that lands in your account.
