Selling a car in the region

Where to sell your car across Hexham, the Tyne Valley, Cumbria, Consett and the Borders

There is more than one way to sell a used car in this part of the country. Forecourt dealerships, specialists, classic-car traders, online buyers and our own doorstep service all serve different needs. This page covers the routes available in each area, the kind of car each typically suits, and where our service usually fits in the picture.

Hexham and the Tyne Valley

The area between Hexham, Corbridge, Stocksfield, Wylam and Chollerford is well served by independent dealerships. Most are long-established family businesses, each with its own preferred stock profile. Broadly, three categories cover the local market.

Mainstream forecourt dealers

Several forecourt dealerships across Hexham and the Tyne Valley retail used family cars in the £5k-£20k band. They typically want low mileage, full service history, one or two owners, and clean cosmetics. Cars that fit that profile usually get the strongest offer through a forecourt route, particularly when the seller is happy to drive in for inspection and wait for the right buyer.

Specialist and prestige dealers

A smaller number of independents focus on niche stock: modern prestige (BMW, Audi, Porsche, Land Rover), light commercials and vans, or the higher end of the everyday market. These specialists work to a tighter buying brief and pay accordingly when a car fits exactly. For well-maintained higher-value examples with full main-dealer history, going direct to a specialist is often the strongest route.

Classic and restoration trade

Older vehicles (genuinely pre-1995 classics, restoration projects, barn finds, vintage and pre-war) sit in a different market. A handful of local traders specialise in this end. Originality, paperwork and documented history matter more than current MOT status. We also buy classics, but the route depends on whether the car is a runner or a project.

When a forecourt sale makes sense

  • The car is in good or retail-ready condition with documented history
  • You are happy to drive to a forecourt for inspection and offer
  • You are willing to wait for the right buyer rather than take a same-day price
  • You want to part-exchange for something the dealer has on stock

When our doorstep service fits better

  • The car has any mechanical issue, MOT advisory, or condition compromise
  • You want a fixed offer in writing before anyone visits
  • You cannot easily get the car to a forecourt
  • You want collection, payment and DVLA paperwork all handled at your address in one visit

Carlisle and west Cumbria

Carlisle is roughly 40 miles west on the A69. The west Cumbria corridor is served by a mix of large multi-brand used-car centres and smaller independent forecourts spread across Brampton, Wigton, the Solway and the rural CA8/CA9 postcodes.

The larger Carlisle used-car centres tend to have structured buying desks and a clear part-exchange process, which suits well-presented family cars and 4×4s. Smaller independents in the rural postcodes are typically more selective, often specialising in a particular brand or stock profile (Volkswagens, prestige, ex-fleet). For sellers in CA8 and CA9 a local forecourt can sometimes save a drive.

We collect across all CA postcodes routinely, so the choice between the two routes usually comes down to convenience and the kind of car you have.

When a Cumbria dealer suits

  • You are based in or near Carlisle / Brampton / Wigton
  • The car matches the kind of stock these forecourts already retail
  • You want to compare an in-person figure against a doorstep offer

When our doorstep service fits better

  • You are nearer Hexham than Carlisle and a doorstep collection saves the drive
  • The car has mileage, condition or history that does not fit a clean forecourt profile
  • You want a written offer before agreeing to anything

Consett and west County Durham

Consett sits approximately 20 miles south-east of Hexham via the A68. The local market here is smaller than the Tyne Valley, with a focus on ex-fleet stock, structured part-exchange trade, and a couple of independent retailers covering the wider DH7 / DH8 area.

Consett forecourts tend to suit cars that fit a clean part-exchange profile (recent service history, reasonable mileage, no warning lights). Anything with a story to explain typically benefits from a written-offer route rather than an over-the-counter forecourt valuation. We cover Consett routinely from Hexham, so the doorstep option is rarely far away.

When a Consett forecourt suits

  • You are based in DH8 / DH7 and a Consett forecourt is the closest in-person option
  • The car is a clean part-exchange profile vehicle with no major issues

When our doorstep service fits better

  • You are equidistant or closer to Hexham than Consett
  • The car has a story to explain (mechanical, cosmetic, history) that benefits from a written offer rather than a forecourt valuation

Scottish Borders

For sellers in the Hawick, Galashiels and Selkirk corridor, the local trade is a handful of independent forecourts spread across the TD postcodes. The market is thinner than Tyne Valley or Cumbria, so stock turnover is slower and dealers tend to be more selective.

For postcodes in the lower-numbered TD range (TD9, TD12, TD13) the drive south to Hexham is realistic, so the doorstep option remains practical. Further north, a regional Borders buyer often makes more sense purely on logistics.

When a Borders dealer suits

  • You are TD-postcoded and the Hexham distance is too far to make our doorstep service practical
  • The car is in good condition and benefits from a regional buyer

When our doorstep service fits better

  • You are TD9 / TD12 / TD13 and a 45-minute drive across the Border from Hexham is realistic
  • The car has any mechanical or documentation issue that benefits from a written offer

Or sell to us at your address

If none of the above feels like the right fit, or if the car has any condition or paperwork issue that makes a forecourt visit awkward, that is exactly the gap our doorstep service fills. Free collection across all the postcodes mentioned above. Fixed offer in writing before anyone visits. Faster Payments before keys leave your hand. V5C lodged with the DVLA on the day.
